Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Flying Lotus, King Princess, and Tobe Nwigwe are among the artists who dig into their “origins” in an eight-episode series for Audible.
BANG Music + Audio Post in New York City produced the series, which was executive produced by partner production company, Fresh Produce. ORIGINS asks the artists more than simply, “Where are you from?” with each episode revealing the artist’s earliest influences in their own words.
Frequent Amy Winehouse collaborator, Phil Griffin, hosts the series and offers that the truth of our origin is never just one thing: It’s not just place, it's also people. It's not just people, but also experience. The artists revisit the places and spaces they grew up in and share stories of the people and experiences that shaped them.
As Billie Eilish herself says, “It's funny when people ask someone like me, what their origin story is because I'm no different than anybody else… I see myself in all of those faces that are crying during my shows, that are singing to me and screaming I love you. I was those kids - and I still am.”
Doja Cat tells us part of her joy was, “… coming up with these lyrics that were so silly and fun and great and meaningful to me. And having people share that joy with me. So I'm not just sitting there alone, just like, clapping to myself. You know? I wanted to share that.”
BANG partner, Brian Jones, offered his own perspective on the series: “We had very personal conversations with these incredible forces in music without the typical ‘tell us about the new album’ questions they’ve all heard a million times. We talked about their inspirations, their pain, their families… and some of the earliest events that set them on their artistic path and into all our lives.” Asked about the hardest part of producing a series with some of the biggest artists in the world, Brian offered, “Hands down, it was the craziness of coordinating the times for the interviews. We had Billie in her hotel room in Utah at 10pm, the BANG team in NY at Midnight, and our host in Portugal at four am… time zones were not always our friend.”
The first season of Origins also includes episodes dedicated to Camilo, Mickey Guyton, Koffee, and Tobe Nwigwe; all episodes feature a mix of spoken narrative and original music performances.
