Kaspar won the Sound Design category for the film Otherlands Festival for FLY through Eyebolls, Archie Short and String and Tins

After the triumph that was the first ever Young Arrows we are super hyped for this second year. We can talk about the benefits of recognising young talent until the cows come home, but who better to tell you why than our inaugural winners. Next up is Kaspar Broyd, our 2022 Sound Design winner.

Kaspar won the Sound Design category for the film Otherlands Festival for FLY through Eyebolls, Archie Short and String and Tins.

Q> Why did you / your company enter you in the Young Arrows?

Kaspar> It's a great opportunity to get exposure for new sound design talent, in what is an immensely competitive field.

Q> What did you think about being entered?

Kaspar> Entering was a privilege but I didn't really expect anything to come of it. Because it's The Arrows...

Q> How did it feel to win? Did you expect to win?

Kaspar> It felt amazing to win and was pretty emotional to be honest. I started getting texts through from people I really respect saying how good the film sounded and it hit pretty hard!

Q> Has winning had any impact on your career / career decisions?

Kaspar> The Otherlands film was completed over two years ago now. It was one of my first autonomous commercial music and sound design projects. Winning has definitely given me confidence that I'm pushing in the right direction. Since winning I've moved into a full time engineering role at String and Tins which was always the dream.

Q> What do you think the benefits are of giving young talent opportunities in this way?

Kaspar> It creates a buzz and a space for people coming up to get excited about what they're crafting. Meeting other nominees and winners at events after the Arrows has been great and fostering those communities of like-minded creatives is always good.

Q> What are your career goals?

Kaspar> Keep on trying to make stuff that sounds really good and makes you feel something. Improving my skills and being able to execute the client's vision. I loved working on a feature film, Michael Morpurgo's Kensuke's Kingdom with the team at String and Tins. More feature length films; animated or otherwise, would be great.

Q> What would you say to someone thinking of entering this year?

Kaspar> Do it! Take a punt and get in the mix.
