Jelly producers Laura Thomas and Sue Loughlin, director Em Cooper, Universal's Jonathan Clyde and Sophie Hilton shared the 'Best Music Video' win last night in LA.
The video won the category against 'In Your Love' Tyler Childers, 'What Was I Made For' Billie Eilish, 'Count Me Out' Kendrick Lamar, and 'Rush' Troye Sivan. As part of the special edition release of Revolver, Jelly worked closely with Sophie Hilton and Jonathan Clyde of Universal Music and Apple Corps to craft the music video for 'I'm Only Sleeping', which premiered at Outernet London in November 2022.
Over 1,300 individual oil paintings were combined to create the flowing animation that explores the space between consciousness and sleep. Em was eager to undertake the challenge of the video as she related very personally to the meaning in the lyrics: “It was a project that I felt an immediate spark for right from the word go, and somehow that momentum carried me right through to the end. The song offers up many readings and I think it feels especially relevant right now. I began with the thought that this would simply be John drifting in and out of sleep, flowing between wakefulness and memory and peppered with surreal moments, dipping into the history of The Beatles, with everything fleeting and ungraspable. But the meanings of the film soon began to spread out, encompassing The Beatles’ anti-war feelings, and reflecting on our place in the world."
