ANIMALS Welcomes Director Diane Russo Cheng

Canadian production company, ANIMALS today announces the signing of Diane Russo Cheng to its commercial roster, for representation across Canada. A photographer turned director, Diane takes inspiration from her loud Italian-American upbringing and queer identity to tell authentic and engaging stories. 

Diane began her career as a photographer in the fashion industry, developing a love for conveying movement and texture through striking imagery. As social media evolved into a video sharing platform, Diane recognised the opportunity to connect fashion film and photography with organic storytelling, which led her to create award-winning films for British Vogue and Document Journal.

Moving into the commercial realm, Diane has created campaigns for global brands including adidas, Nike and Glossier. With a distinct blend of cinematic realism, energetic character performances and compelling narratives, Diane transforms the raw emotions of her characters, from anger and frustration to joy and ambition, into visceral and arresting imagery. 

A recent stand-out project of Diane’s is ‘Transenders’, which was funded by Nike and filmed in late 2022. The film offers an insight into the nonprofit skateboarding organisation, Skate Like a Girl, through the eyes of protagonist Alexa, a trans woman skateboarder and mentor. Made by a team of all female and/or queer creative leaders, ‘Transenders’ has so far received a Vimeo staff pick and is making its rounds in the festival circuit.
