Spanish-based company sources unique Majorcan locations for espionage drama starring Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston
On February 21st, the BBC are launching the first episode of new series The Night Manager. The fictional spy drama is based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré and has been co-produced by the BBC, AMC and The Ink Factory. The series has a highly acclaimed cast including Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman, Tom Hollander and Elizabeth Debicki.
The plot of the mini-series follows former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), who is recruited by intelligence operative, Burr (Colman). He is tasked to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Laurie), Roper's girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki), and associate Corkoran (Hollander).
Originally, the production team had looked to shoot part of the series in Turkey. However after visiting Palma to view a ‘lair’ location for the series’ antagonist, Spanish locations were written into the original script.
Executive producer, Trent Walton, who led the initial recces in Mallorca with the production team, comments: “Trying to find a location worthy of housing the worst man in the world was a challenge. Here in Mallorca they found a 16th century fort with four-metre thick walls that had been converted into the most spectacular private and privileged residence on the island. It made sense to then base the house and other supporting scenes in the script in Spain (rather than Cyprus) to make the most of the local aesthetic.”
The series airs in the US on AMC and in Australia later in the year on BBC First.
