Rushes create feature titles for Nigel Cole’s Comedy Drama

East is East writer Ayub Khan-Din returns with another funny, tender-hearted portrait of family strife. Based on his popular play Rafta, (itself inspired by Bill Naughton’s 1960s classic All in Good Time), the film is set in Bolton where Atul and Vina are celebrating their marriage. However, a honeymoon spent with his parents was not part of their plans. Thoughtless patriarch Eeshwar seems determined to emasculate and embarrass his son. As the weeks pass, consummating their union becomes an impossibility that threatens the couple’s entire future.

Rushes Film&TV created all the VFX shots for ‘All in Good Time’, while Rushes MGFX Studio completed the opening credits and sister Deluxe group company, Company 3, graded the film.

The opening titles were designed to complement the celebratory Indian wedding scenes at the head of the film. Senior Designer, Barry Corcoran, designed the opening title cards and composited in additional CG floral elements, echoing henna tattoos, to ensure the titles are dynamic throughout the sequence.

Director Nigel Cole, wanted the end titles to tell the story of the couples honeymoon through photographs they’d taken themselves. A location shoot was required to get the imagery needed, so lead designer, Matt Lawrence, travelled to Blackpool to take the 'tourist photos' himself for the end montage. An additional shoot was then undertaken with Reece Ritchie and Amara Karan recreating the honeymoon poses in a London studio. Set-ups included photo booths, lounging on the beach, eating candy floss and sightseeing etc.

Head of MGFX, Matt Lawrence comments, “We spent a great deal of time in Photoshop and getting the right tone with the narrative was a real challenge. We adapted the versions until everybody was happy with the story telling through the imagery.”

The photos were then treated to have an album feel with corner holders and a Paisley patterned background reminiscent of wallpaper. This photography sequence then flows seamlessly into the end roller which maintains the same feel throughout.

The VFX involved in the film are elaborated on by Rushes VFX Supervisor, Jonathan Privett, “The film has perhaps a dozen shots, the most complex being the opening shot of the film. It is a crane down through a traditional wedding tent in which a panel of the netting has been removed to allow the crane head and camera to pass through. We had to rebuild the panel in CG, 3D track it into place and then effect a natural transition as we physically pass through the netting to reveal the actor below. It proved quite challenging to get a totally natural feel but the end result was certainly worth the effort!”

All In Good Time can be seen in cinemas from 11 May 2012
