Apple has launched its latest Shot on iPhone campaign produced entirely in Mexico. The campaign aims to revive the country’s beloved film genre ‘Lucha Libre’. The spot ‘Huracán Ramírez vs. La Piñata Enchilada’ follows a retired luchador who dons his iconic mask one last time to fight a vengeful piñata. The film is an homage to a genre and sport intrinsic to Mexican culture, whilst also highlighting the robust cinematic capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro.
Significant to the cultural heritage in Mexico, Mexican Luca Libre has a rich history that dates back over a century. The film follows real Lucha Libre superstar, Huracán Ramírez.
Set against the backdrop of Mexico City, the film features various locations important to the Lucha Libre genre. Each location puts the iPhone’s filmmaking capabilities to the test, including action mode to capture kids running, cinematic mode to focus on the chief of police handing Huracán his legendary mask and low light beautifully capturing dark cavernous fight scenes.
Los Pérez directs the campaign from TBWA\Media Arts Lab LATAM featuring two of the most recognisable Luchadores in Mexico, Huracán Ramírez and Dr. Wagner.
“Filming with the iPhone was magical, where there are no cranes, no wires, where there is no equipment to get in your way,” said Flor de Espinas, a Luchadora that, as Huracán one day, was created exclusively for this movie.
“You can grab the camera and be like a steadicam. Not worry about the terrain,” said Los Pérez, Tania Verduzco, and Adrián Pérez.
“I’ve been filming with the iPhone for years, and I think it’s a very practical tool.” said Alexis Zabé, director of photography.
The film will feature on digital, TV and OOH.
