Save Ugly lures you into a world sure to charm and enchant, with puppets singing of their woes with a touch of wit and bounds of charisma
Zoë Bell’s latest spot Save Ugly for the Wilderness Society has just gone live, boasting an A-list cast with the likes of Rosario Dawson, Cate Blanchett and Joel Edgerton.

A three-minute musical comedy, it’s a bold conservation effort that uses humour to connect with everyday Australians.

Rather than focus on the endangered favourites such as Pandas and Tigers, Save Ugly campaigns for the ugly critters that are crucial to our eco systems.

These puppets aren’t cute though. They’re butt ugly, and that’s the point. There’s a Ghost Shark with a retractable penis on his head and the Southern Right Whale whose faeces provides nutrients to the ocean’s phytoplankton.

Actress and Activist Rosario Dawson steals the show, singing, dancing and introducing the characters while dressed as the Ethmia Clytodoxa moth.

Rob Beamish, National Creative and Communications Director at The Wilderness Society Australia, says: “This campaign is the humorous tip of a very serious spear. Save Ugly is our excuse to start conversations about humankind’s need to preserve intact ecosystems, for our own survival. Then drive the change needed to reflect this in legislation.”

Save Ugly was filmed on location in Los Angeles. The Director of Photography was renowned Christopher Blauvelt, who recently shot Sundance favourite Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot.

Zoë Bell says: “We had a stellar crew, and everyone - from construction, camera and costume, to producers, actors and puppeteers - were so excited to get involved and lend their support. It’s a true testament to the bold concept that is Save Ugly, and the desire of everyone to get behind such an incredible cause.”
