Zippo Lighters' Valentine's campaign ‘Our Flame Lasts a Lifetime’, going against seasonal cliches to combine humour and attitude to remind people why Zippo Lighters make for a lasting personal gift.
Zippo actually has a long history of doing Valentine’s ads, but this year offers a modern spin on its holiday advertising that still speaks to the benefits of the classic lighter and its value as a gift and keepsake but allows it also to be viewed with irony around a holiday that not everyone, well, loves.
The brand is doing a small print ad run in the college newspaper for University of Dallas. There are also :15s OLVs that will run as in-stream video ads on YouTube and branded text ads touting their holiday-themed lighters, along with the tagline and Zippo’s product lifetime guarantee.
Lucas Johnson, associate VP of global marketing at Zippo, "Valentine's Day is a big gifting holiday. For Zippo, this campaign was an opportunity to playfully remind people of our lifetime guarantee, and suggest giving a gift that lasts."
Jon Wagner, executive creative director at Ogilvy said, "The work stands out from the overly sentimental Valentine's Day ads we always see. We instead wanted to do something with a little wink, grit and edge - just like the brand itself."
