Even though we can’t imagine life before them, the first-ever mobile phone call was made on 1 January 1985, while the first text message, which read ‘Merry Christmas’, was sent on 3 December 1992 – both of which were powered by the Vodafone network.
Throughout 2024, Radiocentre has been
shining a light on standout radio ads each month. To close the year, December’s ad of the month goes to Vodafone for a nostalgic ‘Connecting you at Christmas’ campaign, created by Leo Burnett.
The campaign celebrates 40 years of Vodafone UK as "The Nation's Network" and its role in keeping the nation connected, particularly during the festive season.
The ear-catching radio ad features a medley of iconic ringtones from years gone by, paired with simple yet powerful greetings between loved ones from Christmases past. It skilfully evokes a sense of warmth and familiarity as it takes the listener on a sentimental journey through time. Vodafone reminds us that although mobile technology has evolved, from brick phones to smartphones (that you can even listen to the radio on), the joy of connecting with friends and family during the festive season remains the same.
The script:
Intro: [mobile phone ringtones]
Merry Christmas, my love.
Merry Christmas, Mum.
Merry Christmas, Mummy.
Happy New Year.
