Directorial duo Samuel + Gunnar have teamed up with creative agency Döðlur and UN Women to highlight the need for feminine products among female refugees.
The 60 second spot 'Dignity Kits' juxtaposes images of women in a bright and carefree mountain scene with darker visuals showing the harsh realities of war and life in a crowded refugee camp. Viewers are then urged to donate to UN Women, a branch of the United Nations dedicated to advancing gender equality around the world, to help them distribute necessities like pads and soap to refugee women.
“The items in these dignity kits are crucial, but are often overlooked when discussing the immediate needs of refugees,” said Samuel + Gunnar. “It was a privilege to work with UN Women to help bring attention to this much-needed initiative, and with millions of female refugees now displaced around the world, meeting their needs is more important than ever.”
Samuel + Gunnar shot the spot in their native Iceland, working with the local UN Women office and local agency Dodlur to flesh out the concept. The spot illustrates the disparity between women in different parts of the world, using one particular girl as the meeting point between the two scenes. Though basic toiletries may be taken for granted by one set of women, they are a high-demand luxury for the other. The spot premiered on Icelandic TV, and is also available online. Samuel + Gunnar are repped by Skot Productions in Iceland and Humble in the U.S.
