If you’re looking for a podcast that will enhance the way you approach your job in the creative industries, without feeling that you’re setting yourself homework, listen to ‘Now Then’.
Hosted by Ozzie Pullin and Craig Bingham, fellow directors and close friends, their discussions broadly centre on commercial and creative filmmaking, but the focus of their intimate chats always orbits around a strong core of humanity. Guests lay bare the ups and downs of finding a voice within an ever-changing and, at times, unforgiving industry.
The idea to create the podcast evolved from conversations on a freelance directors WhatsApp group that Ozzie and Craig are in. Some directors were expressing their vulnerability as they strove to keep their heads above water. “For many, being a director/creative in the commercial industry is a very lonely and isolating role,” say Ozzie and Craig. “For some reason, we’ve never openly spoken about the struggles that come with the role.
“Since covid, our industry has been thrown into a flux, constantly changing shape as we all try and adapt to a new way of working,” they continue. “Many companies have gracefully taken the bow, whilst others have risen up through the ranks.
“It’s in this adaptive time, that we feel it’s important to talk about our experiences in order for us all to feel connected, comforted and supported. Not only this, it’s important to create conversations for the new and upcoming to listen and to learn from.”
That vulnerability they found in the WhatsApp group is the focus of the pair’s exploration of the industry they work in, with some phenomenal stories thrown in from the highs and lows that the commercial filmmaking industry puts people through. “This podcast isn’t a pitch, it isn’t a publication, it’s a platform to help and learn from. And right now, we feel fellow creatives in this digital remote working age industry need it,” say the hosts.
Since starting over a year ago, Ozzie and Craig say they’ve had an overwhelming positive response from people in the industry and across the world. Their guests range from directors to producers, directors, sales reps, editors, casting directors to company CEOs. “We are opening conversations up from all sides, creating a platform of conversations that offer insight not only for this generation of creatives, but for the upcoming,” they say.
From a candid conversation about what music video commissioner Kim Jarrett actually does on a day-to-day basis to the wild origin adventures of director Andzej Gavriss, listening to ‘NOW THEN’ is like sitting in a cosy pub with three friends who really love the creative things their careers allow them to do, just having a nice chat.
