Thunderdance film festival (TFF), the bi-annual event focusing on independent cinema from around the globe, will be hosting its inaugural pop-up at Cannes this year. The event will take place on Tuesday 18th June, 3:30pm local time, at the Olympia Cinema.
McCann Health, one of the world’s most connected communities of health and wellness experts, will be sponsoring the Mental Health category this year and handing out the award to the category winner.
The theme of this year’s pop-up, in honour of its location, is ‘Crime of Passion’ - referring to a crime, in which the perpetrator commits the act against someone because of sudden strong impulse such as sudden rage rather than as a premeditated crime.
The festival will involve a diverse judging panel of renowned directors, producers, actors and influencers, including Jodie Cariss, founder and director of Self Space, a revolutionary new approach to mental health support. The categories will include best narrative, best documentary, best director, best actor, best cinematographer, best music video, best experimental, best mental health-based narrative and best Crime of Passion.
Co-founder Ruby Griffiths comments: “Our mission at Thunderdance is to give a voice to emerging filmmaking talent and the issues that matter to them. The Mental Health category at Thunderdance was one that came about through my background (MSc in the Neuroscience of Mental Health) and my passion for independent cinema. As audience members and creatives, it’s so important to forge a vital and considered approach to influencing our perception of mental health in film. Given Jodie’s commitment to innovation and creativity in the mental health space, we can’t think of a more perfect fit to judge our mental health category. Having McCann Health support this category highlights the importance of mental health and the importance of the filmmakers who tell their stories lifting the stigma about mental health issues.”
The event will include a screening of the winning films, a presentation of the awards and a meet and greet/after party.
