Scott> Being part of the MTV generation, it's tough to pinpoint just one! But Michael Jackson's 'Beat It', Prince's 'Purple Rain' and 'When Doves Cry' stand out. These were more than just music videos; they were mini-movies, telling stories that resonated with the music and went beyond it. They brought a whole new visual dimension to pop music that influenced an entire generation, including myself.
Scott> While media, in general, played a significant role in shaping my career path, it was truly my understanding of the untold stories of athletes that moved me into the media space. Seeing the raw potential for rich, personal storytelling in the world of sports really motivated me to contribute and bring these narratives to life.
Scott> There are several works that have left an indelible mark on me. 'Rudy,' Miracle,' and 'Top Gun' are such classic movies, packed with drama, determination, and a whole lot of heart. Prince's 'Purple Rain' album was a sonic revolution that just never gets old. And let's not forget 'Star Wars', a space opera that expanded our horizons and showed us what's possible in the realm of imagination.
I cut my teeth on sports films with 'Seth: The Hard Way' and 'Laird.' These films were a deep dive into the world of action sports and the athletes that define it. Then, 'FusionTV' on Fox Sports Net, where I learned about blending sports, culture, and storytelling in a fresh and innovative way.
Scott> The coverage of snowboarding during the 1998 Winter Olympics was, frankly, a disappointment. It felt out of touch with the sport and its culture, a misrepresentation that I vowed never to replicate in my own work.
Scott> There's something about the grandeur and drama of the Super Bowl and World Cup broadcasts that can't help but stir a bit of professional envy. The global scale, the top-tier production values, the power to bring millions together - it's truly something to behold.
Scott> Two words: 'Red Bull Stratos' and 'The Art of Flight.' These projects pushed the boundaries of what was possible in sports filmmaking, both in terms of the physical feats they showcased and the ground breaking ways they were presented. They changed the game and helped solidify my position in the industry.
Scott> There are many, but a few that come to mind are 'McConkey,' 'The Alpinist,' 'Dear Rider,' 'Anyone of Us,' and 'Red Bull Rampage.' Each of these projects offered a unique perspective on sports and athletes, delving deeper into their journeys, triumphs, and struggles. I'm incredibly proud of how these stories resonated with audiences and amplified the human side of sports.
Scott> 'Red Bull Stratos' and Levi LaVallee’s Crash, despite their success, still make me cringe when I think about the intense challenges and risks involved. It was a daunting task to capture these high-stakes moments, and while they led to some unforgettable footage, they were nerve-wracking experiences.
Scott> That would be 'Nothings for Free,' a project that continues to spark excitement. It serves as a reminder that worthwhile things in life come with their own set of challenges, and overcoming those hurdles is often what makes the journey worthwhile. This ethos is something I aim to infuse in every project I take on.
