Casting an eye back over the canon of Barcelona-based directing collective CANADA, you can’t help getting the feeling there’s a bigger game afoot. Humour courses through everything they do; it feels like they are picking you up and having a good play with you.
This delightful spot for Coca Cola is no exception.
Indeed, it is an audio and visual feast that comes to life even more with each viewing. Its light-hearted, idiosyncratic nature is textbook CANADA and from the opening frame you are swept up in its narrative. Yet, also present is a level of technical craft and ambition that is synonymous with the directors. The acting and VO performances are perfectly judged, enhancing the juxtaposition between the setting of 1886 and the cap-doffing to modern day technology.
This project was a little different to most CANADA shoots, where they try to capture as much as possible in-camera. The VFX side of things was hugely increased and a lot more ambitious. Glassworks Barcelona completed all the post on the film, a continuation of their enduring and fruitful collaboration with the directors.
It required a huge amount of 3D assets and sets to be created. The two most complex sets were the port of Savannah and Pemberton’s village. Savannah was shot in modern day Barcelona’s port, full of yachts and tankers. So, a whole port needed to be rebuilt, from ships to water and environment.
Pemberton’s village was shot in Almeria. However, the village was extensively rebuilt in 3D to make it look less like a Western. This included a lot of houses and environmental elements such as wagons, trees, smoke and birds.
The 2D teams set to work, compositing the 3D assets and working on set replacement and clean up.
It has been a major undertaking and a complex post process but the result is a charming and intimate spot that really has it all.
