Sequence fuses elements of surrealism and classic imagery from the series to tell a unique story that is as enticingly horrifying as the series

The Mill, a Technicolor Creative Studio, partnered with famed director Guillermo del Toro and his team to create the title sequence for Netflix's latest anthology horror series, Cabinet of Curiosities. Fully designed and produced by The Mill and led by director Chet Hirsch and executive creative director Mike Schaeffer, the sequence fuses elements of surrealism and classic imagery from the series to tell a unique story that is as enticingly horrifying as the series.

The sequence begins quite literally by approaching a multifaceted and mysterious cabinet, only to find ourselves in a museum-like corridor, where the scale of our surroundings is unclear. From there we enter a series of recursive spaces that evolve seamlessly into more sinister states.

Director Chet Hirsch explains: "The common thread in so many of the source stories for the series are moments of transgression, so crossing thresholds visually became a core theme. We're constantly going somewhere we shouldn't. We begin as an observer approaching the Cabinet and quickly realize it means to make an exhibit of us.

"Our team collaborated directly with del Toro and his team, including Academy Award-winning Executive Film Producer J. Miles Dale, from concept to completion. On the collaboration, Hirsch comments, "Guillermo del Toro and his team were a blast to collaborate with. [Del Toro] was observant, insightful, and generous throughout the process. Upon first hearing the concept, he very quickly saw how to refract and refine it into the schematic for what became our final sequence. We were always motivated to push each moment as far as we could."

J. Miles Dale adds: "The process of creating our main title for 'Cabinet of Curiosities' was a joy. Chet, Mike, and the entire team at The Mill came to us with a very strong first pitch, and we just kept building the vision together from there. Using strong imagery inspired by our episodes, they were able to capture the tone of the series and create a mood that sets our audience up perfectly for what they're about to experience."

Sister company MPC, another Technicolor Creative Studio, is a long-time partner of Guillermo del Toro and worked on the episodic visual effects for the series.
