The Goondocks full-service creative agency and production company announced today that its 2022 Wholly Veggie commercial campaign 'Haha, You Just Vegetables' was named the winner of two 2023 Clio Silver Awards - for Copywriting and Filmmaking in Advertising (:31-:60 seconds). The Clio awards for this campaign represent a milestone for subversive comedy in advertising.
“We are honoured and thrilled The Clios chose to recognise ‘Haha You Just Ate Vegetables’ - a campaign that embraces the kind of challenging humour not frequently seen in advertising, and even less frequently celebrated by such prestigious awards,” said campaign director and Goondocks CEO A. Cody Osborne. “At The Goondocks, we hope this will encourage creators and brands to take more comedic risks in their storytelling.”
The Clio Awards is an annual international awards competition that honours excellence in advertising, design, and communication. Founded in 1959, The Clio Awards have become one of the most prestigious awards in the advertising industry. According to the organisation’s website “The Clio Awards today celebrates bold work that propels the advertising industry forward, inspires a competitive marketplace of ideas and fosters meaningful connections within the creative community.”
The Wholly Veggie campaign, made in partnership with LA-based agency Party Land, certainly fits under the umbrella of 'bold.' The campaign features three spots that depict family members tricking veggie-hating loved ones into enjoying plant-based snacks. Set to a heavy metal soundtrack, the mischief culminates in a reveal of the product, a devastated veggie-hater, and the subversive tagline “Haha You Just Vegetables.”
“In advertising, the vast majority of brands want to play it safe,” said Mr. Osborne. “We’re grateful to Wholly Veggie and Party Land for taking a chance on this idea. To us, these Clio awards are a validation that daring and fun in advertising pays off.”
