The morning of June 21st, in Cannes, saw the 3rd straight 8 Industry Shootout flicker to life on the huge screen at the Cinema les Arcades.
22 companies from around the world were competing and the standard, attendance and number of sober people was all super-high.
With the usual straight 8 rules, they each had made an in-camera-edited film on one cartridge of Super 8. They were competing for charity, pride and honour. And
these trophies…
The relief was palpable as the makers of these fab films finally saw their own work for the first time ever.
The entered companies voted for gold, silver, bronze - but not for their own film. The audience volume after the films was scientifically measured and the audience award was awarded to the film with the loudest reaction (aside from the trophy-winning films).
And the results are:
Gold
I am Justin Waite - iris Worldwide
£1000 goes to Wateraid
Silver
Répetez S’il-Vous-Plait - The Producers Brisbane (Australia)
£500 goes to Médecins Sans Frontières
Bronze
In Transit - 18 Feet & Rising (UK)
£250 goes to Stonewall
Audience Award
If - Skin and Bones (Canada)
Massive congratulations to the winners. Many of the audience remarked on what a strong selection of films they had just seen.
From left to right - 18 Feet & Rising (3rd), The Producers (2nd), iris Worldwide (1st), Aarti Mahtani from Cinelab and Ed from straight 8.
Ed passed his thanks to everyone who came and of course to the filmmakers and all their cast and crew - to see which companies entered check the bottom of
