Some of Sydney’s top athletes braved the winter chill at Coogee Beach to participate in the Ultimate Recovery Session, an event aimed at raising awareness and funds for Operation Crayweed, an environmental initiative focused on restoring vital seaweed habitats along Sydney's coastline
Operation Crayweed, an organization of scientists, divers, and volunteers, is dedicated to replanting native Crayweed on Sydney's reefs where it once thrived. This long-term project is crucial in re-establishing essential marine habitats, helping sustain the biodiversity of the city's renowned beaches.

Gemba, a long-time supporter of Operation Crayweed, spearheaded this year’s Ultimate Recovery Session. Leveraging their ‘Dividend for the Planet’ initiative, which allocates 2% of annual profits to proven environmental projects, Gemba provided pro-bono support to coordinate this unique event. The session brought together elite athletes to raise awareness and encourage donations to the cause.

The event took place at South Coogee Beach on August 14, 2024. Athletes from various sports, including AFL, soccer, netball, rugby, and surfing, joined forces to learn about Crayweed and participate in the underwater planting process. Among the participants were stars from the GWS GIANTS, Sydney Swans, Sydney FC, the Roosters NRLW team, Sydney Swifts, and the World Surf League.

Operation Crayweed's scientists guided the athletes through the restoration process, demonstrating how their innovative technology, developed locally in Sydney, is successfully restoring Crayweed populations along 70 kilometres of coastline. These restored Crayweed forests play a critical role in providing food and habitat for diverse marine life and contribute to carbon sequestration.

Professor Adriana Vergés of Operation Crayweed expressed her gratitude, saying, “It was wonderful to engage with these enthusiastic athletes and involve them in our marine
restoration project. By reintroducing Crayweed to Sydney's reefs, we are not just bringing back one species; we are rebuilding an entire ecological community. This project is incredibly rewarding, and we are deeply grateful for the support that makes it possible.”

Gemba collaborated closely with FrontRunners to involve this great line up of passionate high profile athletes. Nicola Barr from FrontRunners and the GWS Giants, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stating, “Athletes are deeply concerned about the impact of climate change on their sports and future generations. With their influence, they have a unique opportunity to drive significant climate action.”
