The jury selected four winning projects spanning hard-hitting choreography, beautifully crafted stop motion and difficult subjects, split between the two categories of ‘Brand New’ and ‘Moving Up’

18 fantastic short films, spanning spec ads, music videos, micro-docs and comedies screened to capacity audiences at the latest Shiny Awards last week.

As per usual at the Shiny awards, 70% of the shortlisted work comes from under-represented directors. After careful deliberation and conversations on the 18 films, the final four winners were announced at the event by Regan Warner, ECD at McCann London, Peniel Gebreselassie and Eleanor Weitzer, creatives at McCann London, Jack Bayley, director of integrated production at Craft Worldwide and LBB’s Europe reporter, Zoe Antonov.

Jack Bayley of Craft Worldwide said: “We were blown away by the quality of the entrants, every one of them deserves better access to the advertising industry and we love that Shiny are giving them that stage.”

Shiny has two entry categories, both designed to help directors achieve relevant career goals to each. The ‘Brand New’ category helps new and diverse directors entering advertising production to make more contacts, build their profile and get more opportunities.

The winners of the ‘Brand New’ category are:

Philip James McGoldrick, for the hard hitting choreography in ‘Born Of Violence’ who wins a meeting with Jack Bayley, director of integrated production, Craft London.

Iulia Voitova, for the beautifully simple stop motion that asks all the hard questions, ‘Roads’, who wins a meeting with Courtney Prettejohn, senior producer at Craft Worldwide.

‘Moving Up’, the second category, is designed to help new and diverse directors break into bigger budget work, such as television commercials. New signings and their reps often find this career step particularly challenging, so the Shiny Awards are very pleased to support this initiative with meetings with the winners in this category.

The winners of the ‘Moving Up’ category are:

Marleen Valien, Werner, for the ‘Made for Hoomans’ Oatly spec ad, who wins a meeting with Regan Warner, ECD at McCann London. Comedic genius and incredible character design both shone through in ‘Made for Hoomans’, where a horse was finally convinced that milk can, in fact, be made of oats.

Phoebe Brooks’ ‘Waiting List’ for Gendered Intelligence, in which we see the struggles that transgender people go through as they attempt to begin their transition through the NHS and its waiting times of three to seven years. Phoebe wins a meeting with Pen & El, creatives at McCann London.

Caroline Bottomley from Shiny said: “That was such a great evening! Everyone was buzzing about the work and the vibe. Our thanks goes out to all of Shiny’s great supporters, the new directors, and Craft Worldwide and McCann for really excellent hosting.”
