In Indonesia, the spirit of independence has traveled from day one to present day while maintaining its true spark and meaning.
This year with great pride, Seven Sunday Films presents the latest film from Gudang Garam and Dentsu Strat to honour and celebrate Indonesia’s 70th Independence Day.
Titled, “The First Day Spirit,” the film is based on the insight that today should be better than yesterday and tomorrow should be better than today, and encourages us to keep alive the spirit of Merdeka, which the country unified from the first moment of inception.
Directed by Abimael Gandy, the film celebrates the country’s independence through the eyes of both old and new, and uses the medium of a decorated war veteran narrating his story to his grandson as a metaphor for the journey of the nation.
As the story progresses, the veteran and grandson travel through the streets of their town and observe the excitement and festive spirit that Independence Day brings, as well as reflect upon the tradition and national identity the day represents.
Renowned cinematographer, Keong, joined the project to give the visuals some of his legendary cinematic magic. He shot the film using specially imported anamorphic lenses to imbue the spot with the dignity and majesty it required. Rachel Srisumarsih headed the production team on behalf of Seven Sunday Films.
