With the group games coming to a close and the round of 16 about to begin, The Liberty Guild's CFO looks to the possibility of England finally bringing the World Cup home

The final group games are all played at the same time to alleviate any tactical bias.

Ecuador vs. Senegal, a game where all three goals came from players based in England (where the best football in the world is played….of course….) as Ecuador's Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by Watford's Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Koulibaly's side-footer won it. Kalidou Koulibaly's nerveless volley sent Senegal into the World Cup's knockout stages for only the second time in their history as they eliminated Ecuador.

Whilst this game was playing, The Netherlands (who failed to qualify four years ago), progressed to the last 16 with an unbeaten record and face USA next. In-form Cody Gakpo scored again for the Dutch against a dismal Qatar, meaning the men in orange finished at the top of Group A, ending Qatar's miserable involvement at their home World Cup with a third consecutive defeat.

Now for Group B. USA vs Iran, it was a match with lots at stake as both teams had a chance to seal a place in the knockout stages. But it was the USA who came out on top as Christian Pulisic scored the winner to set up a last-16 tie with the Netherlands meaning Iran exited the World Cup with a sense of disappointment as the USA made the knockout stages for the third time in four tournaments.

Simultaneously alongside the others in their group, England met their Welsh neighbours for a much anticipated final group game. England dominated throughout and took full control after an uneventful first 45 minutes. And any hopes of Wales qualifying for the last 16 were wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart. Wales were demoralised and outclassed as they knew they were on the way home from Qatar after Marcus Rashford’s emphatic free kick and brace-inspired victory for England - and even better was the proof that Gareth (football's coming home again) Southgate can make in-game changes that affect the results by switching Rashford and Foden's sides to epic effect.

Is it coming home? I think so!
