I Like Music's head of music, David Lightfoot, on songs about work, losing jobs, working for the MAN and getting jobs

Radio LBB: (Un)Employment

January is a long gloomy month and I’ve been seeing a lot about new starts and how this month tends to be the most popular time to quit your job.  This got me wondering if there were many songs about jobs and work out there, songs that could be used for the many ad campaigns that cater for the job search market…

As more and more people return to the office and the prospect of ‘going in’ to work begins to dawn on the not so long ago locked down population, many people may start to look for new employment.

It makes sense for January in some respects, a New Year and a new start, a seasonal change after the holidays and New Years resolutions.

In the UK, US and France for example, January has historically been “a key month to get hired and start a new job”, according to Mariano Mamertino, a senior economist at LinkedIn.

Similarly though, you could say the same of summer, the summer holidays and the return in September to school and the onset of Autumn and Winter, when again there is a peak in September for people wanting to change their jobs.

No matter whether there is actually a best time for finding a new job or not, here’s a handy playlist of some of the best work/employment based songs I’ve found:
