I Like Music's David Lightfoot shares some of his favourite tracks as he returns to the East end of London

Back in the early noughties I was lucky enough to find myself at University in East London. I’d regularly spend my time between Brick Lane, Spitalfields and Bethnal Green. It was a great time to be there, as it was still very arty and a lot cheaper than it is now, meaning that there were loads of cool bars, exhibitions and events happening. You could feel something in the air, it was palpable. The money was slowly moving in, and the place was having one last hurrah before it became what it is today. It’s still awesome of course, but there was something a little more magical about it back then.

I even started a couple of my own club nights – 'Baron Philippe de Rothchild presents' at the Spitz in Spitalfields market and Nintendisco (later Gamerdisco) at various venues around the area eventually settling at the Book Club.

I Like Music has recently relocated to Princelet St off Brick Lane and it is wonderful being back in the area. Memories flooded back to me recently as I climbed the stairs of Aldgate East tube and walked out onto Brick Lane again.

I wanted to create this playlist in celebration of that fact. It’s a selection of tracks by artists that I saw play at one of the many awesome venues in the area back in the day.

There were some very memorable events including The Others guerrilla gig on the back of a lorry at a Love Music Hate Racism festival, the eccentric Helmholtz Resonators with members of (the yet to be formed) Warmduscher watching in the audience at Café 1001, Pete & the Pirates with the Moths at a very sweaty and hot all dayer at 93 Feet East, an impromptu dance off with people dressed as video game characters while I was DJing at the Vibe Bar, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster tearing it up at Offset Festival, meeting Simon Pegg whilst playing at The Fades gig in Toynbee Hall, Bon Iver doing an intimate show at Rough Trade East, the guys from Ikara Colt (who went to my Uni) I think played in the student union one time (memories are hazy). I also saw many great bands at the now closed Rhythm Factory, Catch and 93 Feet East - not to mention squat parties and random backyard events with jugglers, t-shirt printing and fireworks.

It certainly was a fantastic time and place to be and I’m looking forward to what it might bring again, all this time later.
