This playlist is a compilation of some songs that I listened to as a young Black girl living in South Africa. Curating it was a trip down memory lane for me and some of my colleagues here at Pressure Cooker. We're always listening to music in some way or form, since we're a sound and music studio, but playlists like this make the whole studio come to life.
Even back then, these songs drew all my aunties to the kitchen -- their makeshift ‘club’. And when I become an aunty, these songs will do the same to me. Featuring 10 tracks ranging from House to Kwaito and other popular South African genres, this playlist gives you a taste of the diversity of Black South African music in the 90s, 00s and early 10s.
So, if you ever find yourself in South Africa and want to butter up some aunties, play these tunes.
