Shot in a dreamy California desert landscape, the film has a retro 70s aesthetics that fits perfectly with the other-worldly track
Spiritualized have announced news of their first new studio album in 6 years: ‘And Nothing Hurt’, to be released on 7th September via Bella Union in the UK and Europe, and Fat Possum in the US.
The band have shared two tracks from the LP: ‘A ‘Perfect Miracle’ and ‘I’m Your Man’, the video of which was directed by PRETTYBIRD’s Executive Producer and UK Co-Founder Juliette Larthe.
‘I’m Your Man’ was written by Jason Pierce, AKA J. Spaceman, who conceived and recorded the entire album ‘And Nothing Hurt’ almost entirely alone in his East London home. The music video for ‘I’m Your Man’ is a PRETTYBIRD film directed by Juliette Larthe and produced by Hannah Bellil, with cinematography by Cristina Dunlap. Shot in a dreamy California desert landscape, the film has a retro 70s aesthetics that fits perfectly with the other-worldly track.
Director Juliette Larthe commented: “I have worked with Spiritualized for 20 years, either commissioning, creative directing, exec producing or a mixture of all three. I’m so happy that I got to work with Jason Spaceman again, this record has been worth the 6 year wait: it’s a piece of love, and transcends anything else I have heard this century...a proper slayer. Making the assets has been a tough process, yet a fantastic experience. The work speaks for itself - from the press images, the album images, the teaser campaigns to the videos. it was a dream team who smashed it, and I hope it helps get the record the recognition it so truly deserves. Everyone needs this on their playlist. It’s medication for the soul and healing for the spirit.”
Spiritualized have also announced news of select live performances in support of the album, including a headline show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo two weeks after release. From the opening lullaby of ‘A Perfect Miracle’, through to the fading Morse Code at the close of ‘Sail on Through’, and the guitar on ‘I’m Your Man’, Spiritualized wrap layer upon layer of gloriously transcendent sound together to create a mesmerizing and cinematic collection of songs.
Jason Pierce talks honestly about the painstaking, frustrating process of creating And Nothing Hurt: “Making this record on my own sent me more mad than anything I’ve done before. We’d been playing these big shows and I really wanted to capture that sound we were making but, without the funds to do, I had to find a way to work within the constraints of what money I had. So I bought a laptop and made it all in a little room in my house.”
Whereas bedroom recording is commonplace for a generation of musicians who’ve grown up with horizon-expanding tech, Spiritualized have long used the studio as they would an extra member of the band – as a vital building block in the construction of some of the most cherished records of the modern era. This time would be very different. With no grounding in digital recording, Jason had to learn everything from scratch.
And Nothing Hurt will be released 7th September via Bella Union.
