It’s that time of year again! This weekend, The 97th Academy Awards will take centre stage. A night full of drama, tears, and a lot of overrunning speeches.
For the last several years I have (so far) 100% predicted who might win the Oscar for Best Original Song! Let’s see if I’m right this time!
Here’s a run down of who has been nominated:
“El Mal” – Emilia Pérez
Zoe Saldana swaps space battles for a mic in this unique and fiery Mexican style rock anthem (with a touch of opera!) Fast, fierce, and packed with drama - it’s got critics talking and ears ringing.
“Mi Camino” – Emilia Pérez
Selena Gomez delivers a soulful ballad about self-love and authenticity - the kind of song that makes you want to belt it out in the car like you’re in a music video. Or is that just me??
“The Journey” – The Six Triple Eight
Diane Warren scores her 16th nomination for Best Original Song (at this point, the Academy should just give her an award for being nominated so many times!) H.E.R. brings the emotion with a powerhouse vocal performance.
“Like a Bird” – Sing Sing
A feel-good, uplifting anthem that’s been quietly gaining buzz. Definitely one to listen to on a lazy afternoon.
“Never Too Late” – Elton John: Never Too Late
Elton John returns with this duet with Brandi Carlile featuring his signature piano magic and a heartfelt message about life’s endless possibilities. If nostalgia had a sound, it would be this.
Who’s got the edge to win?
Honestly, I’d love to see poor Diane Warren finally take home the prize - she’s been nominated SO many times without a win, it’s almost criminal. But if we’re talking pure power, “El Mal” feels unstoppable. It’s original, bold, dripping with cinematic drama, and demands your attention from the first note. Hard to see anything else stealing the spotlight!
Find out who takes home the gold on 2nd March at the Dolby Theatre!
