Not nine ladies dancing but NOMINT’s nine not-to-miss niftiest bits of news from 2017
As the year draws to a close, NOMINT reflects on its nine niftiest bits of news from 2017. In their top picks from the last 12 months, the animation production company has nabbed new hires, been necky with NOM NOM NOM, Nipped in to numerous film festivals with Bat, gone a bit nutty for Talenti, nursed nutritional habits for Whiskas, brought a newfound sleek to NEODERMA and made nonsensical analogies not a problem for Google...

1. To kick off the year and their new studio, NOMINT’s NOM NOM NOM, released the short film Balls of Deviance. The tongue-in-cheek film takes viewers on a sweeping journey into a world where golf balls reign. Through the film, NOM NOM NOM’s creative director, Christos Lefakis explored a world where the perfectly formed, inanimate spheres take over. Christos says: “What happens when golf balls acquire sentience, or reason of their own? Would things be the same or would they change for ever? Probably the second!”

2. Maintaining its collaborative partnership with Google Creative Lab, NOMINT’s NOM NOM NOM crafted a series of videos and GIFs to launch Sideways Dictionary. The dictionary was created by Google’s Jigsaw and the Washington Post and uses a collection of witty analogies to help explain complex technology terms. Through a minimalist design, the spots introduce the dictionary and teach users how to write an analogy. NOMINT preserve their signature humour by characterising the videos with an endearing cat who playful interrupts the tutorial.

3. In the spring, NOMINT’s BAT (AKA Bali Engel and Matt Landour) released the award-winning short film Shock Therapy produced by NOMINT. Animated in a quirky illustrative style, the 2D animation follows the escapades of Jim, a man who is ‘afraid of everything’. Jim decides to face his fears by inviting them all into his house, but events do not turn out as you would expect. Met with amazing regard Shock Therapy was screened at eleven film festivals globally so far including New York International Children’s film festival, an Oscar-qualifying film festival!

4. The addition of award-winning animation director Daniel Gray to its roster of animators, illustrators, creatives and artists. Daniel is a world-renowned animator, director and writer, whose personal short films Teeth and T.O.M. have garnered numerous awards across international film festivals, including Sundance, Ottawa, Annecy, and the British Animation Awards. Formerly one half of celebrated directing duo Holbrooks, Daniel has directed commercial films for big brands like Coca-Cola, Nike, Allstate, GE and Red Cross.

5. NOM NOM NOM directed a sleek spot, the first in a series for skincare brand NEODERMA. The atmospheric advert demonstrates NOMINT’s versatility, in a change of tone compared to its usual colourful animations. The collective crafted an ambient tone using a mixture of motion graphics and 3D animations and live action scenes.

6. Directing duo and founders of NOMINT, Christos & Yannis, continue their collaboration with US creative agency, Fallon. The pair previously joined forces with the agency to craft animations for Nuchello and Stok, before creating an explosive series of animated spots for American gelato and sorbet brand Talenti.

7. Sebastian Baptista (AKA Sebas) joined the roster of the animation company in September. The director, who is reputed for his talent in 2D and 3D animation and live action, is recognised for his minimalist, sophisticated style which uses refined vibrant colour and an intelligent use of space.Formerly one half of award-winning directing duo Sebas & Clim, Sebastian has since directed a plethora of commercials including recent films for CNN, Primavera Sound and Massimo Dutti.

8. Nearing the end of the year, NOMINT collaborated with AMV BBDO to create a series of 13 animated videos for WHISKAS’ ‘Kat Institute of Technology (K.I.T.) campaign. Maintaining the brand essence of WHISKAS, the string of films feature an adorable tabby cat. The videos form a content platform for cat owners that offers tips and tricks on how to best take care of their feline friends.

9. Making his debut with the animation production company, Sebastian Baptista created the script and directed the playful mixed media commercial for Google’s Waze Carpool App. The zany advert takes a humorous spin on the traditional manifesto in a call to encourage commuters to carpool using the app. Sebas brings a range of everyday, commute-related objects to life by applying a mixed media style of both 2D and 3D style animations, illustrations and collage. “We turned our idea of a funny Waze ‘manifesto’ into a script and used playful, unexpected objects to deliver Waze’s message,” says Sebas.
