Boldly announced today that Olivia Cheng (Warrior, SEE) has been cast as one of the lead actors in the upcoming short drama Sorry For Your Cost from Vancouver-based director, Rosie Choo Pidcock.
Written and directed by Rosie, Sorry For Your Cost is a story of a working class Chinese family that navigates their own grief compounded by the capitalistic funeral home industry. This tragicomedy follows Ren, a scrappy theatre nerd who is riddled with guilt after the loss of her Mother. She is faced with the impossible choice: drop out of school and use her hard-earned tuition money to pay for the funeral, or pursue her dreams and leave Mom behind.
Olivia is best known for her portrayal as Mei Lin in Netflix’s Marco Polo, as Ah Toy in Cinemax’s Warrior and as Charlotte in Apple TV’s SEE. Additional credits include Paramount TV+ The Stand, and SYFY’s Deadly Class. Olivia's film credits demonstrate her commitment to taking on diverse and challenging roles, consistently delivering memorable performances that resonate with audiences.
Writer/director Rosie Choo Pidcock is a biracial Chinese-Canadian actor and filmmaker living on the Unceded Territories of the Coast Salish Peoples (Vancouver, Canada). Her work explores grief, feminine solidarity and the nuances of holding multiple identities. She recently garnered success with her debut short film Esther & Sai; a tender portrait of two immigrant women who meet at a Canadian nursing school in 1976. Rosie is an alumni of the VIFF Catalyst Mentorship Program and a current member of Reelworld’s E20 Emerging Screenwriting cohort.
This film draws inspiration from three of Rosie’s personal experiences; navigating her Mom’s funeral in 2017, participating in a balloon release for a funeral service and a Facebook post she found in a group titled 'Vancouver Buy & Sell Quick', where someone was selling a grave plot for $40,000.
Rosie shares “as we emerge from the global covid-19 pandemic there is a new shared understanding of grief and loss. I believe now is the time for an absurd yet truthful portrayal of losing a loved one”.
Angelica Stirpe (Bloom, Our Grandmother The Inlet ) Geoff Manton (Hair or No Hair, Paco) and Athena Russell (FREYA, Five Fingers of Fury: Idol Hands, Once Upon A Time) will produce and Shelby Manton, Geoff Manton, Kristoff Duxbury and Sebastien Galina of Boldly will executive produce alongside Rosie Choo Pidcock and Olivia Cheng.
Sorry For Your Cost is being supported through the BC Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts and NFB - Filmmaker Assistance Program.
Olivia is repped by Elena Kirschner at RED Management and Paul Santana and Dan Baron at APA.
