Octagon was honoured today, alongside client Mastercard, with wins in six major categories at The Drum Awards for Marketing APAC 2023. The agency’s work with Mastercard surrounding the Rugby World Cup 2021 in New Zealand, including the development of the innovative “Sonic Trophy,” stole the show at the annual awards ceremony.
The Sonic Trophy, developed by Octagon, featured an audio track with live-action match calls and fan commentary embedded within each Player of the Match statue, showcasing the unique history created in each game.
This unique trophy and the surrounding campaign took home gold in the following categories:
Inspired by the oral traditions within New Zealand’s Maori culture, Octagon created the first-of-its-kind Player of The Match Sonic Trophy, presented by Mastercard. Within the trophy, four sound layers – were captured. Mastercard’s sonic melody, the World Rugby broadcast feed, in-game fan commentary, and stadium sound with a Māori kaikaranga (singer or caller) – allowing players to celebrate and commemorate the sounds of each match.
Ultimately, Octagon and Mastercard presented 26 Player of the Match Sonic Trophies across the tournament. The excitement for the innovative trophy was heard far and wide, as posts about the trophy generated tens of millions of impressions across social and nearly millions of video views throughout the tournament.
