JvM Nerd London's Calvin Innes on nerd cultures monumental evolution, where it could go next and why fandoms are perfect for fashion

Nerd culture and fashion have been on a collision course for years, resulting in collaborations that have brought pop culture into the spotlight of global fashion. No longer confined to comic shops and dimly lit bedrooms, elements of anime, gaming, and comics are now embraced on runways and in high-end streetwear. The evolution of nerd culture has been monumental, and as brands embrace this new pop culture the line between nerd and fashion becomes ever more blurred, with more opportunities than ever to explore how these seemingly disparate worlds can fuel creativity and commercial success.

The Evolution of Nerd Culture in Fashion

Historically, the marriage of nerd culture and fashion was rooted in fandom merchandise - think graphic tees emblazoned with iconic characters like Superman or Sailor Moon. But more recently, this has evolved into full-scale, high-fashion collaborations between ‘nerd IPs’ and some of the world’s biggest and most loved fashion brands. Balmain’s collaboration with Pokémon or Loewe’s Minecraft inspired line shows how these IPs are now woven into the fabric of luxury fashion. It’s partnerships like those that reflect the rising demand for nostalgia-driven fashion that appeals to both audiences, and in turn creates entirely new audiences.  It’s a difficult balancing act to please both hardcore fans who grew up with these iconic franchises, and those dedicated followers of fashion, but when somebody gets it right the results speak for themselves.

High-end labels like Balenciaga, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton are using nerd culture as a legitimate source of inspiration. When you're dealing with dedicated, and passionate fandoms, it’s key to make sure these collaborations do not come across as a gimmick, and that they speak to both audiences authentically. Whether it’s the pixelated designs from Minecraft or anime-inspired aesthetics from Studio Ghibli, the best of these collections are designed with the same care and artistry as any other couture line.

It’s clear that nerd culture is no longer just for fans. It’s influencing mainstream fashion in ways we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago.

Where Nerd Culture and Fashion Could Go Next

Looking forward, there’s still room to expand the relationship between fashion and fandoms. While collaborations like FRGMT x Pokémon x FENDI, Doraemon x Gucci, Super Mario x Levi’s, Sailor Moon x Vans or the recent One Piece x Puma collection have bridged the gap between streetwear and pop culture, the potential for deeper engagement is vast. The key to success lies in tapping into the emotional connection fans have with these IPs. Collaborations should always be about more than simply dropping a logo and some character art onto a product. That’s how brands ensure the engagement of fans, and build lasting relationships with fandoms.

Why Nerd Culture Fandoms Are Perfect for Fashion

What makes these fandoms so attractive to the fashion industry is their deeply loyal and engaged communities. Fandoms for Dungeons & Dragons, Pokémon, One Piece and Warhammer aren’t just passive audiences. They are so much more. They are active, creative, and ready to invest in products that reflect their passions. These communities represent a lucrative market, especially as they’ve grown into adulthood and now have the disposable income to indulge in high-end versions of their childhood favourites.

Nerd culture fandoms offer the potential for collaborations that go beyond the superficial. Fans are well-versed in the lore of their favourite games, comics, and shows, meaning that they expect authentic, thoughtful design work when it comes to fashion. This drives brands to dig deeper into the source material, often resulting in more unique and detailed collections that appeal to both casual fans and diehard enthusiasts alike.

Remember last year when Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon collaborated with Jimmy Choo to release some of the most amazing shoes and accessories? The glittering, knee-high boots adorned with Swarovski crystals didn’t just reflect a broad interpretation of the character - they embodied the spirit of Sailor Moon in a way that fans immediately recognized and appreciated. This kind of authenticity is what makes these collaborations stand out, and it’s why nerd culture and fashion are such a perfect pairing. And that’s exactly why the collaboration was so successful, leading to a second collaboration in October 2024, as the Outer Guardians are getting their moment in the spotlight.

Fashion’s Next Frontier

As nerd culture continues to influence the fashion world, the potential for growth is limitless. With deeply engaged fanbases and an ever-growing demand for pop culture-infused designs, there’s no doubt that we’ll continue to see more collaborations at the intersection of fashion and fandom. Some will undoubtedly miss the mark, as brands look for ‘quick wins’ and easy routes into these dedicated fandoms.

When brands take the time to truly understand the communities they are engaging with, they create fashion that not only resonates aesthetically but also emotionally. These deeper collaborations have the potential to spark long-term relationships with fans, driving both brand loyalty and cultural relevance. In a world where fandoms hold the key to powerful, engaged audiences, successful partnerships will be those that honour the stories, characters, and passions that fans hold dear, creating collections that feel authentic, meaningful, and lasting.
