Mythology and The RealReal Team Up to Combat Counterfeits with Canal Street Installation

Independent creative company Mythology has partnered with The RealReal to create a provocative installation at 301 Canal Street in NYC, aimed at raising awareness about the pervasive counterfeit crisis in the luxury goods market. 

From now until early September, coinciding with the peak of New York's tourism season, the installation will educate visitors with a collection of super fake handbags confiscated during The RealReal's rigorous authentication process.


"When TheRealReal approached us, we set out to create an honest dialogue on consumerism and authenticity”, said Ted Galperin, partner and director of retail at Mythology. “Every passerby must do a double-take, questioning the reality of our store, much like they would when judging a handbag’s authenticity. Our message is unequivocal: while others might not know your bag is fake, you do. By showcasing a perpetually closed store, we underscore TheRealReal's unwavering commitment to never selling fakes, reinforcing their leadership in the fight against counterfeit goods."

Strategically placed on Canal Street, notorious for its counterfeit goods, this installation initially appears to be a new The RealReal store. However, upon closer inspection, people will be met with a display of confiscated luxury dupes that are indistinguishable from authentic items at first glance. This "store," which will never actually sell these fakes, serves as a bold statement against the counterfeit industry.
