Snack brand MoonPie spent last year's Super Bowl tweeting outrageously batshit scripts for Super Bowl commercials. It claimed that, would they have had millions more dollars burning their back pockets, it would have made them.
The brand's tweets that night, posted under the hashtag #TheBigThing in a cheeky non-reference to The Big Game, earned them thousands of interactions.
Obviously, MoonPie never actually produced its bonkers ideas. Until now at least.
“Last year, we basically tweeted out these bizarre scripts, poking fun at bad big-budget advertising, and it got a lot of play and sort of blew up with the community,” says Dooley Tombras, president of Tombras Group. “We never set out to shoot those spots, but there was such a big, overwhelming response.”
As a follow-up to its 2018 social success around the Super Bowl, MoonPie, with its agency Tombras Group, filmed three of the scripts. On Saturday
the brand tweeted that it had got the approval it needed to shoot them, saying "Omg my boss just said I could actually make #TheBigThing spots but we can’t run them on tv bc it’s too expensive or whatever and now I have to film them all today I am so scared".
Well, whoever you are MoonPie social media person, you needn't have been scared because these things right here are total gems, shining through in what was a relatively drab year in terms of official Super Bowl commercials.
Eventually the brand shot films for 'Family', 'Study Sesh' and 'Space'. Check out the original scripts and hyperlinks to each film below
