The luxury fashion house delved deep into the director’s archives to create a frame by frame replica of some of his most iconic film moments, writes LBB's Nisna Mahtani

Gucci’s latest collaboration with adidas merges luxury fashion and sportswear to create something truly unique. The ‘Exquisite Gucci’ collaboration is showcased in a Stanley Kubrick inspired campaign, with replicated scenes from some of his classic movies. Featuring all the nostalgia of old-school cinema and the addition of a modern, luxury fashion twist, the House’s creative director Alessandro Michele always envisioned his collections being presented in this unique way.

Shot by the fashion photographer duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, the Exquisite Gucci campaign collaboration features scenes from 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut. According to the fashion house, the collaboration “merges the emblems of the House with those of the iconic sportswear brand. The collection expands on the sartorial streetwear creations with a spectrum of sport-inspired pieces in which the heritage of both brands is encoded in a trio of lines.”

The collection includes adidas’ iconic Gazelle trainers which have been reworked by the House's creative director to feature in velvet, snake print, and GG monogram variations. With a new vision for the shoe, Alessandro’s reimagined designs have a focus set on the future. The collection also incorporates various clothing items which include sports-themed tennis sets, crop tops and duffle bags to match.

Alessandro says, “I’ve always been charmed by cinema. For its power to tell stories that can probe human adventure and its drift. I’ve always imagined my collections as films able to convey a cinematography of the present: a score of stories, eclectic and dissonant, that can sacralize the human and its metamorphic ability.”

Previous Gucci campaigns include the ‘Love Parade’ campaign, in February 2022, where Alessandro showcased over 100 looks on Hollywood Boulevard, once again nodding to his love of cinema. This collection saw Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith and Macaulay Culkin all take to the runway to show off Gucci’s then-latest collection.

But this isn’t the first time the legendary filmmaker has inspired a homepage for his films. Other campaigns have previously featured a nod to Stankey Kubrick, including Channel 4’s ‘Kubrick Season’ which launched on July 1st 2008 and received praise for the uncanny homage to the director.

There have also been several homages to Stanley’s unique creative vision through exhibitions featuring contemporary artists, musicians and fellow filmmakers who are all keen to show their respect. ‘Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick’ featured at Somerset House in 2016 and attracted fans of the masterful filmmaker.
