Imaginary Forces Serves Up Something Sweet with Hulu's Candy Main Title

Creative company Imaginary Forces (IF) releases the main title for Hulu’s Candy, focusing heavily on type and design.

Deconstructing the graphic elements of 'Perfect Housewife' instruction manuals from the 1980s, CD Ronnie Koff set a haunting tone in the titles for Hulu’s true-crime drama series Candy.

The main title for Candy sets the table for an '80s homemaker who is turning up the heat.

“Inspired by Rube Goldberg’s machines, we built the housewife trope narrative around the type,” says Ronnie Koff. Words that once stuck to the page, fall before the next scene to convey how the daily upkeep of being the perfect housewife led to Candy’s world collapsing. With a custom soundtrack and retro color scheme, what feels like a brief sequence becomes a captivating and unconventional story structure. “We stripped the traditional title sequence techniques to their simplistic form,” says Koff.

On Friday, May 13, 2022 , Ronnie Koff and IF animator Rob Slychuck will be doing an Instagram Live on the Imaginary Forces account. Designers and fans of the title will have the chance to chat with the creators, ask questions and hear more details about the work.
