PAKT's Patrick van Drongelen presents new work for Wallbox Chargers

Virtual production is not only a highly promising innovative technique for video, but it also has great added value for photography too. When Wallbox commissioned PAKT to produce a range of photo shoots in different countries, thanks to virtual production, the overall project had significantly less impact on the climate.

Challenge

Wallbox offers a wide variety of chargers for electric vehicles and to market their products properly, Wallbox asked PAKT to shoot a large amount of visual material in 10 different locations, all geographically distant from each other. Experience told Patrick van Drongelen, Managing Director of Peek Creative Studios (part of PAKT), that shooting in so many places was a major logistical, time-consuming, and environmentally damaging task. 'From Norway to South America and back again, photographing in snow and sun, day and night: these are big questions.' A green screen wasn’t an option either as Wallbox's chargers always features a car. 'If you film a car in front of a green screen and put the background in later, the car reflects the green and you almost always end up spend a lot of money in post.'

Approach

Virtual Production offered a great way to realise all of Wallbox's ambitions on a tight timeline and, without any travelling, a significantly reduced footprint. Patrick says,  'We spent 3 days shooting, creating 200 images in 10 diverse locations. We shot different types of weather and actors in different clothing. We made a parking garage more spacious in 3D and the LED screen (onto which the imagery was projected) acts as a great lightbox. The light reflecting on the car was incredibly lifelike. It was phenomenal!'

3 advantages of Virtual Production for Wallbox

1. The production value is huge: Wallbox received 200 assets after a 3-day shoot.

2. Shooting took place in a wide variety of locations with desired lighting and weather conditions.

3. Wallbox's footprint was dramatically reduced compared with all the international travel it would have taken to shoot in all locations.

This article is the second in a series on Virtual Producing. In the next instalments you’ll learn more about several case studies about commercials that PAKT has made in this innovative way.
