Ballistic @ Great Guns director Matt Timmiss and Atlantic Records released a special Halloween redo of critically acclaimed English singer-songwriter Charli XCX’s single ‘Good Ones’.
Born in Cambridge and now based in LA and London, Matt has always been acutely interested in queer stories, how they are told, and the relevance and impact they have on the community - particularly on LGBTQ+ youth. His first feature length film ‘City of Queens’, produced by Great Guns, was a fresh, gritty documentary on drag culture which championed difference and resilience. It has been picked up by Sky UK and Italy and most recently 10 Viacom CBS Australia.
In order to create the sexy and spooky drag film, Atlantic Records approached Matt to direct the Halloween reimagining of the film, with nods to the official music video.
The film features Drag Race UK queens A'Whora, Krystal Versace, Cherry Valentine, Elektra Fence and Asttina Mandella as the lead queen. Having worked with her previously on Ava Max's ‘My Head and My Heart’ starring Bimini Bon Boulash, Matt reached out to experienced choreographer Margo Marshall (a drag queen in their own right with experience performing with Sink the Pink and Mel C), to choreograph the routine. Taking inspiration from 90s/00s girl band era, with a lot of wide stances, hip isolations and heavy on musicality, the pair created the sexy and dominant look of the video.
Filmed in the Asylum Chapel in Peckham, the stunning location lent itself to the moody, witchy style of the film. The crew created three unique setups where the queens skilfully performed their routines.
The film was produced by Lily Roberts from Warner Media Entertainment.
Matt Timmiss, Ballistic @ Great Guns director, comments: “Sean Ward at Atlantic Records approached me with a video idea - he wanted to create a special Halloween film for Charli XCX's latest single 'Good Ones'. We wanted to use UK queens from Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK. As Charli is so well regarded in the LGBTQ+ community, this was a chance to bring her fanbase and the Drag Race fanbase together under one sickening video.”
