Gramercy Park Studios, has collaborated with Pixel Artworks, to create the soundscape for ‘The Butterfly Trail’, a mixed reality experience, due to launch on September 5th at the Outernet London, near Tottenham Court Road.

The Butterfly Trail will guide visitors through explorer Professor Peter Pelegrin’s Botanical Workshop and into his Glass House, where they can interact with the experience via the browser on their smartphone.

Gramercy Park Studio created a 32-channel spatial sound design, composition and mix for the experience. This is the most complex spatial mix yet to be deployed at Outernet and provides an intriguing, complementary soundscape for the visual experience.

David Lazaro, who composed the music for the experience, said, “To address the music to the multi-dimensional space at the Outernet really made this a unique compositional experience and challenge. The music for The Butterfly Trail was quite a long 'cue' and, as a partly orchestral score, one challenge was that it had to 'move' with and animate the butterflies in all dimensions, whilst simultaneously allowing their own sound to move in the space.”

"David's music really drives the narrative of this experience and the sound design needed to fully immerse people in Dr. Pelegrin's Workshop and Glass House. By using the spatial sound system at the Outernet to its full potential, we could really create a sense of place and depth by adding details to different zones within the rooms and tracking the movements of the butterflies as they move from wall to wall." said Sam Cross, sound designer, GPS.

“For the Butterfly Trail we wanted the audio to be as magical as our visuals. We felt in safe creative hands with Gramercy who understood our vision of the narrative. They created a curious and wonderful soundscape for the glass house and the magical creatures within and composed a beautiful musical interpretation of the story. The 32-channel spatial sound mix makes the experience even more immersive, with sounds travelling all around the space at Outernet, just like our butterflies.” said Svenja Frahm, creative director, Pixel Artworks.
