One of the most recognisable characters on British television returns this week for the latest advert for Gocompare.com. This time, the moustachioed tenor, Gio Compario, is joined by another familiar face: the enthusiastic cab driver from the comparison site’s previous campaign.
Created by duo Chris and Siân Wilkins, the new advert sees two friends on a gondola-ride in Venice discussing where to get a loan to buy a new saxophone. On cue, Gio materialises on a gondola, the cabbie (now a gondolier) helpfully shares the trademark ‘fantastic’ deals offered by Gocompare.com. Having delighted the women, the opera singer then takes a selfie with the jolly cabbie-cum-gondolier,revelling in the Venetian spirit.
In continuation of Yellow Boat Music’s partnership with the comparison site, Philip Jewson and Paul Cartledge were responsible for the music throughout the production process. They delivered a bespoke piece for the spot, which called for a saxophone composition to announce Gio’s arrival and end the segment, and anew arrangement to complement the vocals of Welsh tenor, Wynne Evans, the man behind Gocompare.com’s mascot.
This latest spot required Wynne’s vocals to be to be specially recorded in harmony with the rhythm and mood of the new arrangement. Philip Jewson explains: “Our main challenge was to arrange all the different musical components to work within the framework of the Venetian theme. We reworked the signature catchy jingle into a jaunty Neopolitan waltz in line with this new setting, and wove the strings (which we recorded in Prague), mandolins, and an orchestral component into this overall structure.”
The TVC launched on 18th September and will be supported by radio segments.
