Getting Back to the Future in 2014

2014 Wish List: Ton Habraken, owner and VFX supervisor, The Ambassadors

For my 2014 creativity wish list, I’m looking forward and backward – harking back to the good stuff from the past that seems to have been lost, and future-gazing a world of possibility that lies ahead.  It’s like Back to the Future, but without the DeLorean.

First up, what I would like to resurrect one ghost from creativity past:  Progressive films.

The other day, I sat down with a bunch of creative directors who we’ve worked with in the past and we ended up reminiscing about work we did in the early 2000s.   It was great and so much less play-it-safe than a lot of what is out there today.

It feels like, in 2013, we were more traditional in our outlook, less brave and happy to just surf the norm, rather than unleash our progressive potential.  I want to get back to the art, to stand out from the crowd and to make films with balls! I want to deliver content that is cutting-edge in terms of art and tech, and worlds apart from what we’re doing now.

And looking into my crystal ball, what I would like to summon up from the future is true convergence of media.

Today, it seems advertising agencies are still catching up to the opportunities that these new and traditional platforms, and the connections between them, can offer.  There’s a lot of talk out there about cross-channel content but it feels like brands and agencies are still just ‘dipping a toe’ into the realms of possibility.

Imagine being able to build an avatar for yourself on a website, then see it aired on a commercial the same day, or use it for gaming, or incorporate it into the websites you use every day.

The knowledge is already there to make these dreams a reality but everyone in the industry seems cautious to make the first move.  At The Ambassadors we are passionate about pioneering the technology to create projects that can easily be transported into diverse screens and platforms.

Technology is moving so fast and there is so much exciting stuff we can create, I want to do it all. I want art, technology and science to melt into a force which can be so powerfull that we’ve only just begun to grasp it’s potential. It’s something we’re actively pushing forward to at The Ambassadors. We’re bridging the gap by having great designers, artists, filmmakers, programmers and tech-guru’s in our team. I already see them come up with amazing ideas every day and I expect them to do so much more in the near future.

Technology and science must truly become happy bedfellows with the creative industry.  Once you mash up the skills of the artists and the nerds, wonderful things can happen. That’s what I want to see accelerated in 2014.
