Marking 125 years of Foster’s Lager, this Daniel Kleinman-directed spot for adam&eveDDB takes us back to 1888, when Ralph and William Foster gave Australia its first taste of true refreshment.
The ad focuses on the sweltering moments before a beer reaches the mayor of Melbourne’s lips as the Foster brothers look on coolly. Framestore made sure the sense of thirst came across, with Mark Beardall adding sweat and reddening faces in Flame to make everyone but the brothers look hot, while Stef Perry created the spot's searing grade.
The biggest task though was creating the town hall you see in the opening wide shot. “This was created from stills captured of various town halls and grand buildings from neighbouring towns and a day’s stills shoot in Melbourne” says Mark, who was on set in Australia.
“Once the town hall look had been decided I then had to adjust all the lighting and shadows to match the scene and add window reflections of the shoot location. Then the image was projected onto geometries so that a change in perspective could be felt throughout the move. The sky and distant town were also added in.”
Finally, Mark also created the viewfinder and old photograph look towards the end of the spot.
