Tongue in cheek campaign from VMLY&R highlights essential elements of car production designed by women

To celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Ford is flipping the script with their new ad campaign, ‘The Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition,’ which – believe it or not – celebrates the significant role women have played in the auto industry. 

Initially appearing to be a traditional car advertisement showcasing a new Ford Explorer, the story quickly shifts to a completely reimagined vehicle without many of the essential features developed from those who made a huge impact – women. Without their hard work, essential car elements including heaters, windshield wipers, turn signals, brake lights, and GPS would cease to exist.

In support of the campaign, Ford is highlighting the achievements and contributions of female innovators overs the years on Ford.com and their social accounts, featuring trailblazers such as:

  • Florence Lawrence, pioneer of brake and turn signals 
  • Dorothy Levitt, creator of the rear view mirror 
  • Dorothée Pullinger, innovator of the rear view mirror 
  • Stephanie Kwolek, innovator for tire and brake pads 
  • Dr. Gladys West, pioneer of the modern-day GPS 
  • Cynthia Flanigan, chief engineer, hardware integration in vehicle hardware engineering  
  • Jackie DiMarco, vehicle programs director for F-Series and commercial trucks  
  • Jennifer Brace, trends and futuring manager  
  • Poliana Rocha, design and release engineer  
  • Usha Raghavachari, innovation lab director: London, Melbourne & Sao Paulo  
  • Lucretia Williams, strategist and planning expert  
  • Nicole Herrera, CAE and vibration testing engineer  
  • Julia Matos, Mustang Mach-E D&R engineer  

Ford knows the importance of women in the auto industry today and the future. Which is why it not only recognises these women innovators of the past but also celebrate those who are crucial members of the Ford team today including Dianne Craig - president of Lincoln, Elena Ford – chief customer experience officer of Ford Blue, Lisa Drake – VP of EV industrialisation for Ford Model e and others.
