A-MNEMONIC's Rob Dunham shares his predictions for ahead of this years Emmy awards

I possibly wouldn’t have come across some of these shows, so it’s been great to discover some new things to watch. Here is my rundown, and prediction of the Emmy nominations for Outstanding Original Main Theme Music.

Squid Game

Composer - Jung Jae-il

I watched the first episode (almost) to the end. Couldn’t stomach it. Difficult to understand how such grisly violence would pass for entertainment. In the end I succumbed and guiltily watched the series. What did strike me, aside the blood and guts, was the very distinctive music. A  perfect combination of disturbing, depressing, funny, wholesome and very twisted.

'Loki'

Composer - Natalie Holt

The only British composer in the line-up.

This is a truly epic score. Her mixture of big orchestral and synths feel really fresh and perfect for the Marvel show.

'Only Murders in the Building'

Composer: Siddhartha Khosla

Steve Martin ‘s created and exec produced this xx part series. When a grisly death occurs in an apartment block, three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. Not the most original of plots, but it is engrossing.

Sidhartha’s score is quirky and full of intrigue. The titles too. Perhaps not as stand out as Squid Game.

'Severance'

Composer: Theodore Shapiro

Severance is a science fiction psychological thriller that focuses on an organisation called Lumon Industries which practice the procedure of ‘severance’, which separates the work memories of their employees from the non-work memories. Set up like a dystopian horror, the narrative keeps exploring different themes through the confines of its workplace.

The opening music, composed by Theodore Shapiro, starts off very sparse, even awkward, dark, and haunting - just like the plot of the show.

There's definitely an air of mystery and suspense. It has a great build with an interesting and creepy piano melody throughout. It's a good example of how a few notes on the piano can be scarier than a 90-piece orchestra.

'The White Lotus'

Composer: Cristobal Tapia De Veer

The White Lotus is a sharp social satire following the exploits of various employees and guests at an exclusive Hawaiian resort over the span of one highly transformative week.

The music theme to White Lotus, composed by Cristobal Tapia De Veer, is definitely a bit off the wall - and most definitely quirky.

The lead melody is comprised of a distorted messed-up vocal-sounding instrument that repeats and builds up to a bonkers crescendo of chanting, moaning (possibly nose flutes!) and animal noises. It certainly has a bit of an edge, and totally mad, I love it.

My prediction…

I really love the awkwardness  and darkness to the music theme for Severgence - how it really evokes the feeling of the show within the music. However, if I was going to make a prediction for most outstanding and original main title music, I’d have to say the theme for “White Lotus.” It stood out as super creative, quirky, and totally unique.
