Kasey Lum's stark drama Bloom, featuring a bravura performance by Jodi Balfour (For All Mankind, Ted Lasso), is a thought-provoking exploration of the interconnectedness between humanity and nature. The film is now online following a successful festival run including a world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and a US Premiere at Aesthetica Film Festival. Bloom delves into the concept of biophilia (our inherent affinity for nature) and the consequences that arise when we resist this connection. 'Bloom' serves as both a poignant narrative about heartbreak and a profound meditation on our relationship with the natural world.
Director Kasey Lum on his inspiration for the project, “After spending so much time indoors during the pandemic and away from others, I found a new relationship with nature in the form of a Fiddle Leaf Fig plant. It was my sole source of connection, filling a space that being unable to spend time with friends and family left behind. Watching it grow, and experiencing my connection to it grow, inspired me to think about our relationship to nature in a different way. This kind of connection is complex and visceral. I worked closely with cinematographer Jan Klompje to develop the look and feel, including shooting on 35mm - 4 perf which offers an organic quality that can’t otherwise be replicated, much like nature can’t be replaced in our continually evolving world. Our original score by composer Ali Helnwein also injected the film with a sense of whimsy.”
