Alejandra Zambrano, CEO of Banana Ponch and her team in Colombia on who they are and why they believe in the great talent of Latin America

1. What is Banana Ponch?

Banana Ponch is a creative lab that has revolutionised the way Colombian post production works. We work in different areas: illustration, animation, post production, 3D, VFX. Where we explore with different digital and analog techniques because we have the privilege of understanding and consolidating different artistic disciplines.

2. What is Banana Ponch's philosophy?

We are passionate about transforming ideout transforming ideas. We like to go out of the conventional, exploring new alternatives that solve and generate impacting results. We are a laboratory of artists who like to investigate, experiment and solve, being clear that good processes are the differential of a successful project.

3. How was it born?

Banana Ponch was born from the creative need to face new challenges, to create different processes and explore new solutions with different disciplines, that's why it's two creative heads Alejandra and Jasson (CEO and director of 3D) decided to leave our jobs (agency) and create what we would call a creative lab, where its objective would be to create a different way of working between client and the talents that make up Banana.

To tell you a little bit about it, we turned to our experience in the advertising industry and found in the creative language (which we understand and identify ourselves as creatives of the media) that the need is not in making a case, it is in proposing and guiding our clients in orderly processes to have excellent results. This is how Banana was born, a world full of possibilities to create, work as a team and explore.

4. What differentiates Banana Ponch from other post production companies?

Our great differential is our creative lab. Each creative head, taking into account the characteristics of each project, reviews the best feasibility of development together with the production area in order to meet, improve and transform the client's requirement taking into account the trends that mark the day to day; being at the forefront makes our clients very satisfied with our proposals since we provide different solutions.

There is a second great difference that was born, and that is to be able to work with different artists to give them visibility by working with us. Banana works on two different fronts: the client, and the artist where we give visibility to their work. We understand that in a country like ours: Colombia, it is very difficult to make a living from art, illustration, painting and from our side we can encourage them, give them that stability and tell them: you can really live from what you love to do, in this way we support each of our artists.

5. What is the Banana Ponch ‘Ponch’?

We use the phrase "Ponch" to describe action of going beyond, of not staying in the conventional but to explore beyond the normal - traditional. It is that force, that punch, it is not punch but Ponch, in fact it is a word that is common in our country, it is that "berraquera" as we say here in Colombia, it is to put the heart, the soul, to put all the passion to the project.

As a team, we really enjoy when the client lets us create because the motivation is alive day by day and the projects are amazing. So our slogan: ‘we give Ponch to your ideas’, is because we place such high value on strength, love, passion and desire. That is the ‘Ponch’ of Banana Ponch.

6. What clients would you love to give ‘Ponch’ to?

We would love to do another music video. To be able to create an animated video clip would be wonderful, to work with different techniques; to be able to do it in digital painting. The year 2022 was spectacular because we had the desire to make a reggaeton video clip (music genre), and we were given the opportunity to participate and propose things for Wisin y Yandel. Now we would love to make a video clip for Katy Perry that is totally animated, we are fascinated by her aesthetics and the one she manages in her audiovisual pieces. We would like to create one of those worlds that she imagines, cute, fantasy where we could involve techniques, we would enjoy it very much. We would really like to work for Coca Cola, we feel that there is a lot of freedom and beautiful things that can be done in 3D.

7. What has been Banana Ponch's biggest challenge so far?

For this question we made a census with the whole team, each one remembers different projects as personal challenges, corresponding to their area. However, we all came to one conclusion and that is that each project brings its own challenge, it entails learning new tools, new techniques in a short time.

8. Why work with Banana Ponch?

Because we really enjoy what we do, we are a team capable of innovating, of providing solutions; we have built a great family at Banana. We understand each other, we share, we dream together, we are passionate about our work and although sometimes we work late nights or extra hours, we really love what we do. Order and methodology allow us to see things in a different way.

9. Why believe in Colombian talent?

Because the Colombian talent has something different, it is something that the world should know and it is that "berraquera", despite the difficulties, despite the pandemic and many circumstances, the Colombian people rises and is reborn. It is full of strength and moves forward. In addition, the strength and drive brings out many talents, including many of the Colombian post production artists who have been taken to other countries for that very reason. The Colombian artist has sensitivity, has the desire to grow more and more every day. There is a lot of talent in this country. Young talents that are emerging and we are behind them to make them shine and make our studio grow every day.
