Charlotte-based commercial production company Caravan, who produced its first feature film Long December in conjunction with Bad Theology Pictures and Visit Films, announced that Electric Entertainment has officially purchased the distribution rights, including all digital, non-theatrical, home video, and broadcast rights in the United States and Canada.
Written and directed by Thomas Torrey (Fare, Minor Premise), Long December most recently won the One in a Million Award for Narrative at the 2024 Sun Valley Film Festival.
The film, which follows a struggling singer-songwriter pursuing - and perhaps redefining - his dream during one December month, stars newcomer Stephen Williams, of the band Jude Moses, and Emily Althaus ('Orange is the New Black,' 'Handmaid’s Tale'), with platinum-selling songwriter and music artist John Mark McMillan, Charley Koontz ('Community,' 'The Boys'), and Maximiliano Hernandez ('Avengers: Endgame', 'Sicario') rounding out the cast.
“Not only does the message of the film resonate with us as fellow filmmakers, but working with long-time collaborator Thomas Torrey presented a special opportunity to bring an honest story to life in a particularly rewarding way,” Michelle Wheeler, executive producer for Caravan, said. “Long December joins a growing catalogue of original feature films and documentaries we're proud to share with audiences in the coming year. The film is brimming with the creative and commercial appeal ideal to debut our new Originals division.”
Jon Muedder, president of Caravan, concurs, “Thematically, Long December echoes struggles that resonate with me as a creative, making its development a deeply personal endeavour. I'm excited for a broader audience to experience the film this winter."
“Long December is a personal film about the tension between searching for the big break and being content with the blessings in front of us,” filmmaker Thomas Torrey said in a statement. “It’s a tension that I live with often and is shared by every artist that I know. Making this film and crafting the songs of its soundtrack was a rich experience of an incredible community of filmmakers and musicians. I wouldn’t have been able to get Long December made without Caravan’s partnership, which has felt like the culmination of artistic dreams we’ve shared for many years.”
“Long December is such a smart film about following our hopes and dreams,” Ryan Kampe, president of Visit Films, said in a statement. “It teaches us about the small moments that impact our lives and potentially lead us down new paths. Thomas has crafted a film that, I hope, with Electric’s place in the market and expertise, will reach audiences this holiday season and beyond.”
“With its authentic character portrayals and glimmers of hope sprinkled throughout, we’re glad to be able to offer Long December to audiences everywhere just in time for the holidays,” Steve Saltman, head of domestic sales at Electric Entertainment, said in a statement.
The soundtrack for the film, which was recorded live during filming, features stars Stephen Williams and John Mark McMillan, as well as renowned folk and rock singers Sarah DeShields, Drake Margolnick, and others.
Long December is expected to release this fall, the trailer for which is available HERE.
