Sarah de Boer's professional journey began with a background in history and international relations, followed by a short journey in consultancy. However, her true passion for creative leadership blossomed during her seven-years at VICE. Now, with two years at Wolfstreet, Sarah brings her diverse experience to the table, balancing her career with the joys of motherhood, as she's being bossed around by her spirited three-year-old daughter.
Sarah> Although my first taste of leadership was at VICE Benelux where I got the opportunity to manage a very talented young group of people, I believe that I experienced my first true leadership role when I became a mother to my daughter. My toddler's the toughest boss I've ever had, and she doesn't take excuses. Motherhood taught me patience, multitasking, and how to lead by example. If I can negotiate with a three-year-old, I can negotiate with anyone.
Sarah> I figured out my leadership style by reflecting on what helped me the most. I knew I wanted to be the kind of leader who empowers others, especially junior employees. I believe people strive by encouragement and tasks that might seem a bit intimidating at first. Don’t we all? I do.
Sarah> When I first started, I felt like I had to put on a 'leader' persona to be taken seriously. But it didn’t work for me because I felt uncomfortable, and people could tell. Staying true to yourself is key — people will listen and follow when they know you're genuine. Plus, leading becomes a lot more enjoyable when you can just be yourself!
Sarah> Everyone can lead. As long as they stay true to themselves and you do what you love. Find your own leadership style, don’t copy others. Authenticity is key in leadership because it helps others feel comfortable opening up to you, allowing you to discover and see their strengths.
Sarah> Absolutely, I fail all the time! No day without! Failing is a part of life and I embrace it. Without it, there would be no celebration of success and no way to learn and grow.
Sarah> The best thing about leadership at Wolfstreet is working with such talented people and seeing how involved everyone is in all the amazing creative productions we deliver. In a smaller setup like ours, it's incredible to witness how everyone feels responsible for every project, which brings out the best in our work.
Sarah> In challenging times, flexibility is essential. There's always work to be found if we stay creative and adaptable. Equally important is maintaining a positive attitude within the team. When morale dips, I believe it’s the responsibility of the leadership to bring that energy back and I love doing that.
Sarah> Wolfstreet culture is all about teamwork and shared responsibility. Nobody stops until the work is the best it can be. Sure, everyone's got their opinions (sometimes a bit too many!), but it's all in the name of making our work top-notch.
And culture? It's everything. It's what sets us apart and keeps us pushing boundaries. I'm always amazed by the talent and the quality of work we are able to produce here.
