Dominic won the Colourist category for the film Long Live Cowgirls for Wrangler

After the triumph that was the first ever Young Arrows we are super hyper for this second year. We can talk about the benefits of recognising young talent until the cows come home, but who better to tell you why than our inaugural winners. Next up is Dominic Phipps, our 2022 Colourist winner.

Dominic won the Colourist category for the film Long Live Cowgirls for Wrangler.

Q> Why did you / your company enter you in the young arrows?

Dominic> As the British Arrows are an already established event, of which many of our colourists have won awards, Company 3 felt it was a great opportunity to celebrate young talent like myself. The awards team at Company 3 filter through many projects, and they anticipated that Wrangler ‘Long Live Cowgirls’ could do well.

Q> What do you think about being entered?

Dominic> I was thrilled to learn of the awards, and was grateful to Company 3 for putting me forward. Most awards in the industry aren’t aimed at younger, up and coming talent so I was really pleased to be given a chance in the Young Arrows!

Q> How did it feel to win? Did you expect to win?

Dominic> It was a bit surreal, I had absolutely no idea I was going to win. It was such a strong category, I hadn’t really thought that far ahead!

Q> Has winning had any impact on your career / career decisions?

Dominic> Absolutely it has. Standing on stage in front of some of the biggest names in the industry, receiving the award and watching back the winning film put me into the spotlight more than I had ever been before. Additionally the social media posts and marketing from the British Arrows, Company 3, colleagues and even my old university Ravensbourne, meant that the film and my award was being shared into many new circles of potential clients.

Q> What do you think the benefits are of giving young talent opportunities in this way?

Dominic> The clear benefit to me is the exposure to the industry. The British Arrows has such a high level of respect from so many people, so having me and my work exposed to them is amazing.

Q> What are your career goals?

Dominic> I would one day love to back this award up with a Gold Arrow in the main British Arrows event. I’d love to collaborate with more Directors and DOPs, and I’d love to dip my toe into long-form projects. Being able to bounce between short-form and long-form is the dream.

Q> What would you say to someone thinking of entering this year?

Dominic> It’s a no brainer, just go for it.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday 1 November at BFI Southbank. Tickets are on sale here
