AMPERSAND's History of Advertising: Mary Wells Lawrence

Each month Ampersand is recognising an advertising legend

AMPERSAND's History of Advertising: Mary Wells Lawrence

Today we will be raising a toast to Mary Wells Lawrence, advertising legend and founder of Wells, Rich, Greene.

"The best advertising should make you nervous about what you're not buying."

The American advertising executive revolutionised the game with risky, clever campaigns for brands like Sure Deodorant ('Raise your hand if you're Sure'), Alka Seltzer ('Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is') and Ford ('Quality is Job 1.')

From being the first female CEO of a company listed on the NY Stock Exchange, to having Emilio Pucci design uniforms for the Braniff Airlines flight crew, to creating the iconic I ❤ NY slogan, the impact of Lawrence and her agency Wells Rich Greene changed the #HistoryOfAdvertising forever.
