In the bustling world of television production, collaboration can be a catalyst for extraordinary creativity. For the highly anticipated series "Platonic," we once again joined forces with the brilliant minds of Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, known for their previous work on "Friends from College.”

Visually, we sought to depict the segregation between men and women through the elegant simplicity of lines. These lines, representing the characters, would converge and diverge, filling their interactions with a touch of chaos.

While the concept may appear straightforward, its execution demanded meticulous refinement. The initial challenge lay in utilizing abstract, line-based forms to convey the characters' personalities and the intricacies of their relationship. Our remarkable illustrator, Tricia Kleinot, began by drawing the key vignettes by hand, which was then output and cut together into a timing cut masterfully edited by Tom Pastorelle. That cut was very useful for addressing timing and pacing in our follow-up discussions.

We leveraged After Effects' cel animation and 2D animation tools. We meticulously crafted the lines' movements, capturing their subtle dance. Using tools like Path Wiggle and animating a Trim Path created a look very similar to a hand-drawn line while allowing artists to retain full editability.
